If you missed the latest Town of North Hempstead meeting, here are the highlights:
- The board passed a measure for located behind the Apple store on Northern Blvd, allowing for extra parking. This measure was on hold from the Sept. 12 meeting and was open for public comment until the meeting on Tuesday. Supervisor Jon Kaiman noted that local residents are concerned that adding more parking spaces could mean that the property is able to attract a higher-traffic tenant, but he said covenants have been put in place to limit the property's potential future iterations. One of these covenants include that a traffic study will be done and if that shows that an additional ingress and/or egress should be put in, the property owner has to make a "good faith effort" to accomodate that.
- A permit to operate a car repair shop at 163 Herricks Road in Garden City Park was approved by the town board. Councilman Angelo Ferrara said that this would bring the non-Mineola side of Herricks Road into the same kind of code as the opposite side of the street.
- The town will hold a public hearing on Oct. 23 regarding new residences and their energy conservation.
- Kaiman expressed thanks to Sen. Jack Martins for helping the town regain a grant for drainage work in Mineola and Carle Place.
- The Discovery Channel will film in the Town of North Hempstead, highlighting the town as one of the best places to live in the country. The town will pay for the film production and in return can use the footage for its own advertising or other purposes.
- The town board approved supplemental budget appropriations related to three grants: $3,250 related to the National Emergency Grant from the New York State Department of Labor; $3,075 for the LIPA rebate; and $198,700 for a Housing and Urban Development/Economic Development initiative New Cassel Beautification/Revitalization Grant. Kaiman noted that the town had received millions of dollars in grant, which help to reduce costs to taxpayers.
- Kevin John O'Reilly has been removed from membership from the Flower Hill Hose Company No. 1.
- Dr. Matthew Smith and Emdadul Haque hae been added to the membership of the Fire-Medic Company No. 1 in Port Washington and Alex Savicevic has been removed from membership of this group.
- Edwin Lavi, Elirom Kalatizadeh and Matthew Monahemi have become members of the Vigilant Engine & Hook & Ladder Co. in Great Neck.
