Many Topics Covered at Baxter Estates Meeting

The Village of Baxter Estates Board of Trustees discussed tax liens, a move to a new address and other local concerns.

The Village of Baxter Estates' Board of Trustees emphasized cracking down on residents that have outstanding tax bills at its most recent meeting on Thursday night. Mayor Frederick Nicholson said that tax bills must go out the first week of June and that too many are behind with their village taxes. He added that some have owed for years.

"There is someone that is 10 years behind with their taxes and we must send out letters to everyone that is delinquent," Village Attorney Christopher Prior said. "Tax liens should go out for those who are not clearing up their back taxes."

The board also addressed that they are moving their offices to a new location on April 1. Deputy Mayor Charles Comer announced that the board is looking forward to their new residence starting the beginning of April. He said they are moving to the Bird House at 315 Main Street in Baxter Estates and that the new location would be more spacious and less costly. The Bird House, which is currently owned by the Port Washington Water Pollution Control District, was built in 1913 by Allen H. Baxter's widow and her son John J. Bird.

In addition, the board also discussed new storm water drains on Hillside Avenue and No. 3 Hilltop. Trustee Alice Peckelis said that the drains were put in place in the 1930s and they are not adequate now.

"People shouldn't have to deal with storm water run-off and the water is running under the hilltop, racing to the south side of No. 3 Hilltop," Peckelis said. "We should get an engineer's opinion and put this in our budget."

There will also be village elections for three trustee seats on Tuesday, March 16. Peckelis along with trustee Douglas Baldwin are running for re-election for two-year terms while Michael Taylor is running to serve out the remainder of Ray Keenan's term. All three are all running unopposed. Elections will be held at Village Office, at 2 Harbor Road, from noon to 9 p.m.
