2012 Memorial Day Commemoration And Fireworks; EcoFest

Happenings in North Hempstead

In commemorating those who died serving our country, the Town of North Hempstead announced details for the upcoming fireworks tribute on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at in Port Washington. The event kicks off at 6 p.m.

To honor those who gave their lives defending the United States, the town is hosting a night of pyrotechnics and musical performances by Beginnings, a Chicago tribute band, and Early Elton, an Elton John tribute band.

According to the town, a rain date, if necessary, will be announced soon.

The fireworks show, launched from barges in the harbor, is scheduled to start around 9 p.m.

Setting the scene for the evenings’ festivities, the United States Marine Corps Color Guard, the Nassau County Police Pipe Band, the Volunteers of America firing detail, and local veterans’ organizations will honor the fallen from the nation’s armed forces. Live entertainment will feature Beginnings, a tribute to the music of the band Chicago, and Early Elton, a tribute to the music of Elton John.

All vehicles entering the park will be charged a $5 parking fee. If the parking lots fill up, town-operated buses will be available free of charge to shuttle concert-goers to the park. Law enforcement officers and North Hempstead Public Safety officers will be on hand to direct foot and vehicular traffic.

To help maintain the administration’s commitment to preserve the Town’s quality of life and focus on a healthy environment, recycling containers will be placed throughout the park.  The Town asks those attending the celebration to be diligent and cooperative in placing trash in the receptacles provided.

EcoFest A Hit at Clark Botanic Gardens

EcoFest, which took take place May 5-6 at Clark Botanic Gardens, drew more than 6,000 people. It featured live music from the Long Island band, Strummin’ and Drummin’ with Chris and Matt Marshak, a performance by the Central Park Zoo Wildlife Theater, wildlife demonstrations from Erik’s Reptile Adventures, Native American story-telling, and transformational face painting.
