New Parking Restrictions in Eastern Crest

An ordinance was adopted at a recent North Hempstead meeting to restrict parking for three-hour increments.

New parking restrictions are now in effect for Annette Drive, Jeanette Drive, Linda Road, Irma Avenue, Evelyn Road and Eastern Crest Road in Port Washington.

Some residents are not happy with the three-hour alternate side of the street parking restrictions announced at the July 12 Town Board meeting. North Hempstead Councilman Fred Pollack, however, said that the parking problem on these blocks has been ongoing. Something had to be done, or the same challenges would continue.

For the south side of Annette Drive there is no parking from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. during weekdays, not including weekends or holidays. On the north and northwest side of Annette Drive there is no parking from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The same restrictions hold true for Jeannette Drive.

Resident Lawrence Hatton feels that the half-hour time frame to move a car from one side of the street to another is not sufficient.

“A three hour time-frame with more time in between to move your car is a much better option,” said Hatton. “A lot of people are against this type of alternate side of the street parking.”

Matt Scheckmer who lives on Irma Avenue feels the restrictions will be a hassle for his family.

“I will have no place to park now and I have to work in Manhattan,” Scheckmer said. “How about handing out resident stickers so we can park?”

Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman explained that resident stickers are not legal in New York, so it would not be an option, but there might be a provision for handicap stickers in the near future.

Still, some residents felt the new restriction will help prevent commuters from adding to traffic congestion.

Other new restrictions include: no parking on the west side of Linda Road during weekday hours between 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on the east side there is no parking between 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Evelyn Road has the same restrictions.

On the east side of Irma Avenue there is three-hour parking during weekday hours between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. On the north side of Eastern Crest Road a no stopping restriction will be enforced from the west curb line of Port Washington Boulevard, west to the east curb line of Evelyn Road. There is no stopping at any time on the south side of Eastern Crest Road from the east curb line of Evelyn Road, east to the west curb line of Port Washington Boulevard.

According to the Town Board, a violation of this ordinance is punishable by a fine not in excess of $30, plus any surcharge payable to other governmental entities. Pollack said that these new restrictions will be monitored accordingly.

“This has been a raw situation between commuters and residents,” Pollack said. “We might have to change these restrictions in the future, but for now I believe this is the least objectionable option.”
