The commissioner of North Hempstead's building department is stepping down in May after six years of service, Newsday reports.

Kevin Cronin began serving as Department of Building, Safety Inspection and Enforcement commissioner in 2008.  He told Newsday that he was leaving on his own accord.

Cronin began his tenure at North Hempstead after criminal charges were filed against Town of North Hempstead employees after a 16-month probe into allegations of corruption involving the permitting process  that resulted in several jail sentences, including the previous building commissioner.

The town has since worked to make permit processing more user-friendly.

The town will begin a search for a new buildings commissioner, a spokesman told Newsday.

The residents of North Hempstead will be paying for all the mistakes these inspectors, plans examiners and commissioners. Try and sell your home or get refinance without dealing with the miles of red tape and arrogance of this department. The fees are ridiculous and they will go back to 1950 to look for open permits. No grandfathering. J
