North Hempstead Storm Management Efforts in Full Swing

Shelters open, crews working around the clock to maintain roadways.

Winter storm management efforts are well underway in North Hempstead after a winter storm dumped about 10 inches of snow on Long Island throughout the night.

According to the town, the highway department has been working to maintain roads since the snow began to fall Thursday.

"All 600 lane miles of town roads were passed at least twice by over 80 trucks and 100 crew members," accoding to a statement from North Hempstead officials.

Town Warming Centers are open this morning as of 8 a.m. at the “Yes We Can” Community Center, 141 Garden St. in Westbury, Tully Aquatic Activity Center at 1801 Evergreen Ave. in New Hyde Park and the Port Washington Senior Center at 80 Manorhaven Blvd. Staff will be on hand with hot beverages and snacks. 

The town’s 311 call center has been staffed since 6 a.m. and is equipped to answer any storm-related questions. Call (516) 869-6311 outside the town. 

Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth visited North Hempstead’s Emergency Management Center in Westbury Friday morning as storm response efforts continued, according to town officials.
