North Hempstead To Perform Same-Sex Marriage Ceremonies Sunday

For same-sex couples who want to get married as soon as they legally can, New York City is not your only option. The announced that it will have a Supreme Court Justice at the Clerk's office on Sunday perform ceremonies along with .

The Supreme Court Justice F. Dana Winslow, who is the Special II Supreme Court Justice or the duty judge for Nassau County for the weekend of July 22 through July 24, will consider applications to waive the 24-hour waiting period between receiving a license and getting married. This period of time is necessary for all couples who are not already married in another area.

The Town of North Hempstead will be open on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; initially the office was just going to issue licenses that day. The Town is one of a few places on Long Island where same-sex couples could get their licenses on Sunday.

City officials have received more than 2,660 applications for licenses to date, according to a Town press release, and there will be a cap of 764 on Sunday. For those who may not make the cap, the Town of North Hempstead is a nearby option.

“It was important for us to take the lead of being part of this very monumental day," Gross said.
