Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio had a special greeting for Plandome Heights constituents at Tuesday's Town of North Hempstead board meeting.
"Welcome back," she told them.
The town board voted to keep Plandome Heights with two other Plandome villages despite the town redistricting committee's recommendation that Plandome Heights become part of the fourth district.
Supervisor Jon Kaiman called this move "diminimous" and said that this would have a limited impact on the overall redistricting plan.
DeGiorgio noted that this was an important issue for people in Plandome Heights and that they felt as if they had more of a community interest being in the same district as the other Plandome villages.
A petition submitted to the town contained 618 signatures asking that Plandome Heights remain in the sixth district.
Plandome Heights Mayor Kenneth Riscica noted that the Plandome Heights residents and the town board didn't necessarily agree about redistricting efforts but said he appreciated that the board listened and showed sensitivity about the issue.
"This was never about a person," Riscica said. "It was about a structure."
