Port North Election Takes New Twist

Write-in candidate changes complexion of the race.

A write-in campaign is underway in the village of Village of Port Washington North, in an election that had been considered uncontested, with incumbents Mayor Robert Weitzner, and Trustees Michael Schenkler and Sherman Scheff on the ballot.

But now the variables of the election have changed, with write-in candidate Selwyn G. Rudnick of Mill Pond Acres vying a trustee slot.

“I plan to be involved in finding solutions which benefit all the residents of Port Washington North,” Rudnick told Patch, in an email.

A victory for Rudnick could mean two trustees hailing from Mill Pond Acres, which according to the Village obtains services privately, including roadwork, snow removal, tree maintenance, lighting, electrical, street sweeping and leaf pick-up.

And while Rudnick maintains that he seeks to consider the entire village, Weitzner’s concern is that Mill Pond Acres “is looking to add a seat and have disproportionate representation on the board.”

The election takes place Tuesday, March 19, 12-9 p.m., at Port Washington North Village Hall, at the Stop & Shop Plaza at 71 Old Shore Road.
