Question of the Day: Post Office Cuts

When was the last time you set foot inside a post office?

The U.S. Postal Service is set Tuesday to announce a list of 3653 post offices that could be shut down.

When was the last time you visited a U.S. Post office? Has competition from Fedex or United Parcel Service caused you to frequent post offices less?

Or has competition helped to improve the service and led you to use it more?

I am frequently in the post office to buy stamps for my business or mail large envelopes or packages. UPS and FedEx are no competition if you just want to mail a letter for $0.44 and have it arrive in about 2 days. However, the post office does need to cut back due to people using the internet more. So some smaller post offices will need to close and we will have to give up Saturday delivery to better match cost and revenue.

I can't imagine them closing the Port Washington Post Office. Every time I go there it is quite busy. And the service has been very good lately. Whether mailing a package, buying stamps, weighing a letter, getting certified or priority mail, or even renewing a passport, our local post office is a tremendous asset to our community.

In fiscal year 2010 the Post Office lost 8 billion dollars. Even with a monopoly they can't break even. Maybe it's time to privatize and be as cost efficient as Fed X & UPS.

I was at the post office in Port Washington today and I noticed that many of the window clerks are now sitting down when they serve you. One employee never even got up from her seat to hand me my receipt. I have noticed that the clerks are different from years past--- I work in Port Washington, so I often go there at lunch time. When I asked one person to show me what priority box to use - she continued to only point in the direction somewhere at the front of the lobby display- I was so confused until I found a Postal worker outside of the lobby returning from his break who was only more than happy to explain the different priority rates of mailing and which one would be best for my mailing. His name was Jay-. and I often see him at the counter - To think that he was on his break and yet still spent time helping me is reassuring that some post office employees really like their jobs. Most of their employees just ignore you when you walk into the lobby but I have never seen Jay ignore anyone. He is so up beat and friendly with everyone who comes up to his counter. Have others who have visited Post Washington post office also noticed this.?

On another note-- I wish that the Post Office Lobby could extend their hours to 6 or 630 pm at least 2 nights a week. This would allow us to get to the PO after work. I now have to use a good portion of my lunch time to mail my packages and letters. Why did they cut the ours in the first place?? Helen
