Pharmaceutical Drop-off Program Announced

Program helps residents dispose of expired and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications.

A pharmaceutical drop-off program to help with the disposal of expired and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications has been scheduled at several Manhasset and Port Washington locations in the coming months.

Through a partnership with the Port Washington School District, the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau Police Department and Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice, has helped Town residents dispose of 4 tons of pharmaceuticals in the past 4 years, according to a press release from the Town.

The program addresses the epidemic of pharmaceutical drug abuse and the potential threat of the drugs entering our drinking water.

“North Hempstead realizes the dangers of having prescription drugs in the hands of teens, as well as in our landfills,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “By teaming up with our public schools, we continue to educate our youth on how disposing of unwanted and expired pharmaceuticals protects our environment.”
