Schimel: LI Bus Important to Northwest Nassau

Bus riders must make their voices heard.

The MTA Board has voted unanimously Wednesday not to renew its contract to operate the Long Island Bus Service.  This action seriously undermines the lifeblood of my Assembly District, which commutes daily to and from New York City, and puts everyone dependent on buses and trains in a very precarious position.

My testimony at a recent MTA hearing, and all of my letters and phone calls could not change the decision. I had hoped there would be a mutually beneficial decision to continue the existing Long Island Bus Service.  It is my hope now that our County Executive recognizes the importance of my northwest Nassau Assembly District, which relies so heavily on the buses for transportation to the train station as well as for traveling throughout Long Island.

Bus riders must make their voices heard over the next months to make sure that service is not interrupted, diminished, nor their fares increased.  We must not be silent.

Michelle Schimel is the New York State Assemblywoman for the 16th District.
