Shimel Lends Support to Bill Honoring Fallen Officer

Gov. Andrew Cuomo designates New Hyde Park Road overpass as the "Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a bill designating the New Hyde Park Road overpass as the “Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. Memorial Bridge.”

In October 2012, Olivieri, a 15-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, was struck and killed by a motorist while investigating a traffic accident on the L.I.E. involving a drunk driver. He is survived by two children.

“Designating the New Hyde Park Road overpass in honor of Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. is but a small token of appreciation to Police Officer Olivieri and his family for the ultimate sacrifice he made on behalf of our community,” said Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, a sponsor of the bill.
