Sounds of Gunfire Aimed at Ducks in Manhasset Bay

Duck-hunting season extends through Jan. 27; in some cases longer.

Those gunshots heard around Manhasset Bay in the morning? They are aimed at ducks, according to the Port Washington Police.

That's news to some residents, who weren't sure what to make of the sounds.

“I heard them again this morning at just after 7,” one resident told Patch Wednesday. “Happens fairly often.”

Of course, people can't simply hunt at will. There are strict guidelines

Duck-hunting season for most species on Long Island extends through Jan. 27.

That is the case for hunters of ducks, coots, mergansers, sea ducks and brant; and until March 9 for snow geese. Special dates and restrictions are set for hunting Canada goose.

Hunters must first register with the Department of Environmental Conservation to receive a license, and follow all regulations. Learn more
