Students Essay Winners from Port

Students submitted essays in contest run by Sen. Jack Martins.

Two Port Washington students were among the essay winners in a Thanksgiving Essay Contest, sponsored by Sen. Jack Martins (R, Mineola). 

Local winners include Sarah Finkelstein, a sixth grader from , along with Sabrina Meyers, a 6th grader from the in Port Washington.

Sixth graders in New York's seventh senatorial district were asked to write a 250-300 word essay on what they are most thankful for. Martins honored each of the winners and awarded them certificates of achievement during a reception at the Shelter Rock Elementary School in Manhasset on Nov. 17. Of the 300 entries, 22 were selected as winners.

“Our children have an amazing capacity for understanding our world," Martins said, in a statement. "They have an extraordinary ability for empathy and compassion beyond their years. We can be grateful that they willingly share it.” 

Martins commended all the students who submitted essays for the contest, declaring them winners "for expressing themselves creatively."
