Locals can save both water and money by participating in North Hempstead’s “Recycle the Rain” initiative. Town residents can purchase 60-gallon rain barrels for a subsidized cost of $50.

The barrel, made from recycled plastic, captures and stores rainwater. The average homeowner can save as much as 1,800 gallons during the summer season, according to the Town.

The Town also offers a composting program.

Sign up for a class on water recycling or composting, which are held throughout the summer at Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson. Call 311 to schedule a class or e-mail recycle@northhempsteadny.gov.
