The will soon be starting a pilot biodiesel production program. The program is slated to begin later this spring at the Solid Waste Management Authority facility in Port Washington, according to a press release.
This program involves the use of used cooking oil, which the Town anticipates in many cases can be acquired for free from local restaurants.
“We are always studying was to save taxpayer dollars but in this challenging economic climate, we are even more committed to doing more with less,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said in a statement. “This initiative not only promises to benefit us fiscally but environmentally as well.”
This biodiesel program will eventually be based at the Town's Highway and Parks headquarters and the oil will be used to power the Town's fleet of vehicles, a spokesman explained.
Film Festival Coming to North Hempstead Towns
The Gold Coast International Film Festival will be held in several parts of the Town from June 1 through June 5.
North Hempstead's Business and Tourism Development Corporation has put $250,000 into this project, which is expected to draw between into the community.
The hope of this film festival is for people to come to parts of the Town and spend time and money there. Ian Siegel, the BTDC's executive director said that even if people spent $10 as a result of coming to the film festival, $300,000 to $400,000 would be raised to benefit these local areas.
The film festival will be held in the following places: , , Manhasset Cinemas, Great Neck – Squire Cinemas and Roslyn Cinemas. There will also be screenings at Adelphi University, Hofstra University, the Nassau County Museum of Art and the Great Neck Arts Center.
New Tax Website
A new North Hempstead Tax Office website has been launched. Residents can go to www.northhempsteadny.gov/taxes for further information.
On the website, residents and look at and also pay their tax bills via check or credit card, according to a press release.The site also has the tax due date schedule, information on tax grievances and exemptions, among other things, the release said.
