Town of North Hempstead to Open Warming Centers Thursday

Port Washington Senior Center to serve as one of three locations.

The Town of North Hempstead will open three warming centers in anticipation of substantial snowfall and below freezing temperatures that are expected in the next several days.

According to the town, the warming centers will open Thursday, Jan. 2 at 12 p.m. with closing hours dependent on the severity of the storm. The centers will be located at the following locations:

  • Michael J. Tully Park Aquatic Activity Center, 1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park
  • "Yes We Can" Community Center, 141 Garden St., Westbury
  •  Port Washington Senior Center, 80 Manorhaven Blvd., Port Washington
The National Weather Service on Wednesday afternoon issued a blizzard warning, in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Friday, for all of Long Island as predicted snowfall totals inch upward.

Transportation to the warming centers will be available to residents by calling 311 in the Town of North Hempstead or 516-869-6311 outside the Town.  That number can also be used for any storm-related questions.

"I encourage residents to take every precaution to ensure their safety during what is expected to be a significant winter weather event,"  Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said.  "Due to frigid temperatures, remaining outdoors for extended periods of time could be dangerous. I advise residents who need to take advantage of the warming centers, as well as transportation to these locations, to do so."

Town staff will be on hand at the warming centers and hot beverages will be available.

Additionally, the Town's Office of Emergency Management will be working in coordination with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management to ensure proper safety measures are taken and communication with residents persists throughout the storm, according to tow officials.
