Town OK's Manhasset Shopping Center Expansion

News from North Hempstead board meeting also includes an upcoming hearing on zoning change in Port Washington.

If you missed Tuesday night's Town of North Hempstead meeting, here are some of the highlights:

  • The Town board approved the addition of about 1,020 square feet to a store at 1950 Northern Boulevard in Manhasset. This change will also move five parking spaces and add an additional three spots. Supervisor Jon Kaiman said that the community was aware of this application and that there didn't seem to be any opposition to it.
  • The board approved of the Vigilant Engine, Hook and Lader Co. in Great Neck, providing fire protection with a budget for 2013 of $359,429.
  • A public hearing about adding a no stopping zone on Evergreen Avenue in New Hyde Park, west of Leonard Boulevard, was set for April 23.
  • A hearing regarding Guilford Road in Port Washington with various changes around Lynn Road and Newbury Road will be on April 23.
  • On April 23 there will also be a public hearing that will set parking restrictions for the winter season on Argyle Road.
  • There will be a public hearing on April 23 about amending the zoning code in the Town.
  • A public hearing about changing 194 Main Street in Port Washington to "Business B" zoning from "Residence C" zoning will be on April 23.
  • A donation of items including a library rack and child's sofa were accepted for the "Yes We Can" Community Center from the Early Years Institute.
  • The Town is preparing to submit a grant to expand the Clark Gardens children's garden.
  • The Town is co-sponsoring the Row for Autism event in Port Washington. Supervisor Kaiman added that events such as Row for Autism bring in people from across Long Island to the Town.
  • The Town is sponsoring the PortFest 2013 Music Arts and Community Festival. The primary sponsor of the event is the Port Washington school district. The event will be on May 11 at the Schreiber High School field.
  • Earth Day in the Town has been designated April 26.
  • The Town board approved moving $750,000 from the 2013 unassigned fund balance to the highway fund because of expenses related to Hurricane Sandy. In addition, $250,000 came from the 2013 unassigned fund balanece to the general fund for other Sandy expenses and $150,000 was moved to the lighting fund for Sandy-related costs.
  • Woo Yeon Hwanh was elected to be a member of the Port Washington Fire Medic Co. No. 1 Md Emdadul Haque was removed from the department.
  • Brian Mott, Patrick O'Donnell and Michael Ambrosio's resignation from Port Washington's Protection Fire Engine Co. 1.
