Town: Record Crowd Attends Recent FunDay Monday Health Fair

Hundreds make their way to North Hempstead Beach Park July 29.

More than 900 seniors made their way to North Hempstead Beach Park on earlier this week to what Town representatives say is the most well-attended FunDay Monday Senior Health Education and Information Fair, in the event’s 20 year history.

Blessed with beautiful weather, seniors from all areas of the Town were able to consult with 74 exhibitors who provided practical assistance on an array of topics.

Attendees were able to take advantage of free screenings provided by cardiologists, pharmacists, ophthalmologists, audiologists, podiatrists and physical therapists. Nurses, attorneys, financial advisors and advocates were also on hand to provide assistance and information.

“This is an example of the constant outreach to our senior population that we are committed to in the Town of North Hempstead,” Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “I am pleased that so many seniors are taking advantage of this great opportunity to connect with healthcare representatives and government officials.”

Attendees included Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington along with Nassau County Legislators Wayne Wink and Judi Bosworth.

Seniors at the Monday's event said they were satisfied with what was offered.

“The Health Fair this year is better than ever before," said Delorise Stover of Great Neck. "I got my blood pressure checked and my cholesterol checked, all at the same tent. At the last one I found out I was a diabetic; today they followed up to make sure everything was ok.”

This year’s list of exhibitors included representatives from Long Island Cares Harry Chapin Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, NICE - Able Ride, North Shore LIJ- Health System, Health Care Partners IPA, Walgreens, Family Aides, Inc., St. Francis Hospital, Winthrop University Hospital, Nassau University Medical Center and a variety of Town of North Hempstead departments including DOSA, 311 Call Center, Parks and Recreation, Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, Office of the Town Clerk, Public Safety, the Animal Shelter and Solid Waste Management Authority as well as government official Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

Nicole Dominguez, a vendor representing Walgreens said, “The turnout’s been great this year.  Seniors have approached us with a bunch of questions about medication and services, and we’ve been happy to help. I think they appreciate the relaxed setting of a fair like this; there are no long lines like you might see in a pharmacy; there’s less pressure here.”
