Your LIRR Commute After Sandy

With commuter anger boiling over repairs to East River Tunnels, we want to know how your commute has been going.

There have been many challenges in the area since Hurricane Sandy struck last month, but one of the biggest has been fixing our damaged rail system.

A major issue has been the repair of two East River tunnels owned by Amtrak which the Long Island Rail Road uses to get into Manhattan.

Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, held a press conference in which he said he received assurances from Amtrak that the tunnels would be repaired by Christmas week.

Morning commute is now ok. Slow but ok. Evening commute is far from ok. Trains are packed and all are locals. I know we have it much better than other communities and although it adds perspective, it doesn't make it any easier.

I understand the LIRR's need to run fewer trains, but since Sandy they have been wsiting until the last minute at Penn Station to display the track, by which time a huge crowd has built up, waiting, and then a stampede, because they know they will have to stand otherwise.
Please, LIRR, put up the track at least ten minutes before departure so people can board in an orderly manner.

No problems in the morning at all. The evening commute is really onerous now - I'm having to leave my office earlier to get home later, and the trains are very crowded. I agree with the prior poster that they should try and post the tracks earlier.

The problems that are happening now are just a magnified version of what happens ALL THE TIME. The LIRR is terrible at communication, treats commuters like cattle and has virtually no disaster planning.

The trips back home from Penn to Port Washington have been packed, standing room only.
I've noticed the trains are also shorter by a couple of cars. Adding cars would help the congestion and you can't blame that on the tunnels!

It has been very difficult and I agree with all posts above. Equally infuriating are the
little newsletters left on the seats with absolutely NO communication on what is being done to remedy the problem or when we can expect things to return to normal. A little transparency goes a long way......

My wife has been lucky so far. She takes the 6:17 to Woodside in the AM and the 3:30 from Woodside in the PM. Both trains have been running on time and are not overcrowded. Last night she took the 7:14 from Penn Station, and as others have stated that train was packed. It was due in Port at 8:00 PM but was about ten minutes late. But as someone else mentioned a few days ago, it still beats driving.
David R. Yale November 29, 2012 at 03:41 pm
There is a possible partial solution to the packed evening rush hour trains: Run express trains originating at Woodside. Yes, the trains to Woodside would still be packed, but then you could change to an express with seats available. C'mon LIRR, it's not rocket science!

I wholeheartedly agree with the posts. The pm trains are the absolute worst. The over-crowding is ridiculous and the commute times onerous. Not only are the trains local, but because note all cars platform at all stations, there are long delays as we wait for folks to make their way through crowded train cars to get out. And as for any communication from the LIRR, it's non-existent. People try to chat up the train conductors just to get some info. Certainly no way to run a railroad! Literally!!

It's approaching 5:00 PM, which means its time to "Spin the MTA Wheel of Delays"
Tonight's delay will be caused by: Signal / Switch Trouble Police Activity A Derailment Amtrak Overcrowding Weather Equipment Trouble General Stupidity

Jackpot! LIRR announced two PM PW express trains reinstated!

Particularly out of line since it's a shared-use puddle for camp groups splashing, not a good poolRead More venue for individuals swimming.

The TONH should be under some investigation for charging such a high fee for a very short summerRead More season. You lose most of june and the pool closes in early September. Better off paying as you go just purchase the parking permit which is good at the Manorhaven Pool and the Harbor beach. Stop buying a season pass in protest to the yearly excessive price increase.

And speaking of investigations, what's up with Jonny's Roslyn CC fiasco?

Contact the Village and the water district, it's probably a problem with a pipe on your street.
