PWEF Spring Challenge Announced!

The room hums with children practicing their special song, students, educators and community members greet each other and take their seats, anticipation fills the space…it must be Mr. A Day at the PWEF Education Support Center. The annual event honors the late Mr. Lee Aschenbrenner, a beloved Port school principal and Support Center volunteer (into his 90s!).  This year’s program included a performance by the Support Center children and a mini-concert by the Schreiber High School Jazz Ensemble. Each of the five elementary schools were given a hand-painted birdhouse made by Center students.

Exciting news arrived mid-event when Center Founder Ellen Fox, announced the

PWEF Spring Challenge. The Jared Family, relatives of PWEF Education Support Center Music Director Doreen Gamell, pledged to match PWEF donations up to $5,000 made by the end of the school year. If you wish to participate and make a secure online donation, please visit: http://pwef.org/donate-get-involved/donate-online.

Since 2004, the PWEF Education Support Center has provided a weekly after-school program for 40+ third graders who need extra help. Tutoring support in reading, writing, math and language skills are offered. The intergenerational volunteer staff is comprised of retired Port Washington educators, talented Port residents and over 20 high school students. The Center focuses on improving literacy and math skills. Individual attention and a variety of creative enrichment activities including music, art, problem solving, writing exercises and guest visitors round out the experience.

The Port Washington Education Foundation is an independent, non-profit, community-based organization. The Foundation supports initiatives to enhance and expand educational opportunities over and above basic educational needs for all students in the Port Washington public schools, including the PWEF Educational Support Center (which also receives funding assistance from the Port Washington Community Chest and Friends of the Library). The organization actively seeks donations, grants and government assistance in order to distribute funds to selected programs and resources. For more information: www.PWEF.org
