Same Old, Same Old, All Around The Town

Tired of the status quo? Tired of the same answers, excuses, and attitudes about nearly everything in Town. Isn't it about time we eliminate the rhetoric and blame and demand answers?

It seems that regardless of the issue, we keep witnessing and hearing the same old rhetoric and explanations over and over again. It is now a couple of years since the Town purchased property on lower Main Street (below Shore Road) for about a million dollars, and after extensive delays, built a parking lot on that site.

The reason for the purchase and lot was to create spots to replace street spots replaced near the corner of Main and Shore. However, anyone who had the "pleasure" of driving in that area realizes that we still have not seen those spots removed, and traffic is still backed up.  We keep hearing reactions complaining about the purchase, or that traffic is "not that bad," etc. What we should be doing is creating lemonade out of lemons, and since the lot's there, alleviating the traffic problem somewhat, while also controlling safety concerns. An obvious solution would be to station crossing guards there during the busiest few hours (like on Main and Port Boulveard) or in front of churches, and other locations. This would help people cross the street safely, while making use of what has already been built. I, for one, am tired of excuses! Let's just get it done!

Similarly, every year since I moved to Port about 16 years ago, we hear the same old debate about schools and school taxes. There's always too much blaming others, or throwing hands up in the air and saying there's nothing that can be done (e.g. state and federal unfunded mandates, contracts, etc.).

As the lead character in the movie, Network many years ago famously said, "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it any more." It's time to fight the system politically, contractually, but most importantly by adjusting our attitudes. There's just been too much "stinkin' thinkin'."

Isn't it about time that we begin to make things make sense, and not just maintaining the same old often- stale status quo?
