Ideas Are Nice, But How About Some Actual Planning?

Our area loves to discuss issues that need to be addressed, but often gets so bogged down in the process, politics and minutia, that nothing of consequence actually ensues. Several years ago, the area engaged in an extensive "visioning" process, yet little came out of that, which the masses agree upon. We hear many ideas, and there is rarely any lack of listening to blame and innuendos, but when it comes to common sense solutions, we rarely see anything develop. For example, there are many areas of Port that could have less and safer traffic patterns, if certain modifications were made. Yet, no matter how many times it's pointed out, nothing happens! The adage about not seeing the forest for the trees seems to apply to how many of us take sides or positions. Human nature is such that we often take stands or positions, and then refuse to compromise or come up with alternatives. It's important to remember that no plan is perfect, but many times there are possible improvements. We have often seen battles over certain projects or concepts coming to fruition, only to end up with far worse alternatives than the original. We have seen arguments about a few parking spots, but continue to do nothing about eliminating dangerous left turns being permitted in various locations, when there are alternatives that would be far safer. On the Shore Road side of Port, even a casual observer ought to realize that left turns being made out of Columbia Place, Central Ave., or the municipal lot (and adjacent apartment building) are tantamount to an accident waiting to happen. This is equally true about many streets that cross Port Blvd. How about examining the traffic patterns and traffic flow around Mill Pond (Harbor Rd and Mill Pond Ave)? Shouldn't safety and common sense take precedence? Why have laws and regulations if they are nearly never enforced, such as stop signs, cell phones and seat belts)? Can't we do better? Let's work together for a better solution and results.
