Elmer Davis’ words ring especially true this Veterans Day. Today, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we take time to commemorate the sacrifice of the brave men and women who throughout our history, put on the uniform and answered the call to duty without hesitation. To serve is an honor. To serve is also a sacrifice on the veteran and his or her family. Our beloved veterans took on the sacrifice and served our nation with pride and dignity in the most trying of times and circumstances. As a result of their exemplary service, our nation remains the greatest nation on earth and our citizens enjoy the freedoms that others may only hope for.
Recently, I was in Ronald Regan airport in Washington, DC, waiting for a flight. A few gates away a group of WW II veterans were arriving to board a charter flight back home after their visit to the WW II Memorial. It was heartwarming and emotional to join with others at the gate applauding and shaking hands with members of the greatest generation. All we could say was “thank you” and they mostly replied “I didn’t do anything." I respectfully disagree.

We owe that same thank you to our veterans who served or currently serve in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and the countless other campaigns, known and unknown, in which those in uniform stepped up to do what was right, in service to our country.
