A Fitting Tribute

Long Island's Favorite Son

Tomorrow will be a bittersweet day for New Yorkers in general and Long Islanders in particular.  Tomorrow, the United States Navy will commission the USS Michael Murphy, a DD261 destroyer class ship in New York harbor. Michael Murphy held the rank of Lieutenant as a Navy Seal. He attended Patchogue -Medford High School where is was on the National Honor Society. And by the way, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his selfless actions in the war on terror in Afghanistan.  As with true heroes, the Medal of Honor was awarded posthumously. Lt. Murphy was the first member of the Navy to be awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War and the first recipient of the Medal for military personnel serving in Afghanistan. The Medal of Honor Citation for Lt. Murphy is a compelling testament not only of courage under fire, but to compassion, commitment, loyalty, determination, self sacrifice and of course bravery. We are all proud of the service and sacrifice of Lt. Murphy and at the same time saddened by an extraordinary life taken much to soon. May the USS Michael Murphy always be a symbol of the strength and resolve of our Nation to protect our freedoms and our way of life. Rest in Peace Lt. Murphy.  God Bless America.
