Yesterday all New Yorkers were once again reminded of the dangers faced by members of the New York Police Department and the heroic actions performed by them all in the line of duty. NYPD Detective Kevin Herlihy from Lynbrook was involved in a close range gunfight with a known fugitive on a subway platform in Harlem. Detective Herlihy faced being shot at by this punk and although wounded in the gunfight, was able to perform his duties with heroism and efficiency and by doing so, prevented others from being injured or killed by the suspect. These stories are becoming all to familiar recently. They remind us of the dangers faced by members of law enforcement. They also remind us that there are to many guns on the streets of our communities. These guns pose a threat to our citizens and those that have taken a sworn duty to protect us. Thank God that Detective Herlihy will recover from his gunshot wound. Thank you for your service, Detective.
