Two American heroes who served as a bomb detecting team through two tours in Iraq will be reunited shortly to enjoy a more peaceful way of living.
Retired Marine Corporal Megan Leavey, a decorated war hero from Valley Cottage, N.Y., and Sgt. Rex, a fearless German shepherd, will soon be reunited stateside. Corporal Leavey and Sgt. Rex worked together on over 100 missions involving the detection and dismantling of roadside IED's in Iraq.
In 2006, one of these explosive devices was intentionally set off by the enemy as these heroes approached it. Corporal Leavey and Sgt. Rex faced the full impact of this blast and survived the cowardly attack with Sgt. Rex still attached to the hero Corporal by his regulation collar and leash. Corporal Leavey retired from her heroic service and Sgt. Rex returned to duty.
Recently, Sgt. Rex was slated for retirement himself due to a medical condition. Corporal Leavey attempted to adopt Sgt. Rex after his official retirement. It took some doing and the cutting of a mountain of red tape, but it looks like these two heroes will be together again shortly as well it should be.
We owe Corporal Leavey and Sgt. Rex a debt of gratitude for their honorable service we can never hope to repay.
Well done Marines! Thank you from a grateful nation.
