On Monday morning the arriving members of the Congregation of the Island Park Jewish Center discovered a broken pipe during the night had flooded the basement and a good part of the first floor of of the temple.
This happening only hours before the start of services for Rosh Hashanah services.
What to do? Well, the parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish, also in Island Park, offered the Parish Center for services and assisted the Congregation in moving over the necessary components of the service including the sacred Torah Ark.
The Congregation will also be celebrating Yom Kippur next Tuesday at the Parish Hall. Different faiths, yes, but mutual respect, understanding and compassion. I am confident that if the situation were reversed, the Congregation would have been the first ones through the door to help the Parish.
There is a lesson to be learned here. Thank you.
