A Student's View: Valentine's Day

What Schreiber students do on and think about the Hallmark holiday.

Valentine's Day ... is it really a holiday? To some high school students it is, but to others it's just another day on the calendar. Just like adults, some hate it and some love it. The ones who have that "special someone" to celebrate it with usually have the typical celebration: exchanging of gifts and going to dinner along with spending the evening together. While the ones who are alone will spend it with their friends who don't have anyone to spend the day with either.

The ones that are lucky enough to have a Valentine probably prepared for the past couple of days and had a wonderful Sunday. Girls made cards and found that perfect little something for their boyfriends. Not something too expensive, but something that shows them that they care. Many girls also waited to see where their boyfriends would take them to dinner while others wanted to see that their significant others were making them or what they got them. Others were alone on this Hallmark holiday, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Boys seem to be on a completely different page. The boys texted their girlfriend's best friends asking them what they like to make sure they got the right gift. If this ring and this card or that teddy bear are good then they went a bought it. Some boys took their girlfriends out for dinner while others cooked them a special meal. They also had to plan what the two did after dinner, whether it was a movie or simply going for dessert or just relaxing at one of their homes.

Most couples had a nice evening together — one that they'll remember. But in reality this is just another random day like any other with an excuse to get presents for one another. The truth is, every day should be Valentine's Day. Personally, I am OK with this Hallmark holiday because I get cute little gifts, but I don't think that this day is realistically any more special than any other.

Many high schoolers that don't have a Valentine would probably agree with my last statement — that this is a stupid holiday and that it doesn't really mean anything. Many girls I know went to see the movie "Valentine's Day" on Valentine's Day with their friends. It seems that they needed that two hours to distract themselves from reality.

Valentine's Day isn't like Christmas or Easter or Passover where everyone is happy. For high school students, if you have a Valentine, you love it, and if you don't, you hate it. It divides the high school kids for that specific day, and forms some type of barrier. So I still question myself, is Valentine's Day a holiday?
