AGATE of Port Washington presents Melissa Sornik, LMSW, on  2e: The Paradox of Dual Exceptionality (Twice Exceptional students are both gifted/talented and possess learning disabilities)

Melissa Sornik, LMSW,  is the co-founder and president of LI-TECA, Inc. (Long Island Twice Exceptional Children’s Advocacy) a 501(c) 3 not-for–profit organization supporting special populations of gifted children and their families, both locally and nationally, through the provision of information, resources and referrals, to promote the identification of twice exceptional (gifted/ld) students, and to aid in the development of programs and services that support their unique social, emotional and academic needs.

Melissa has a masters degree in social work from Fordham University’s Advance Standing Program with a specialization in children and their families. She has designed and implemented a talent development mentor program for twice exceptional children and adolescents and conducts lectures and workshops for parents, teachers and mental health professionals. She has served on the boards of both Lynbrook School District SEPTA (Special Education PTA) and the Nassau Coordinating Council of SEPTAs.

Melissa has been a school social worker providing counseling and guidance services for multiply disabled students, ages 11 through 21 enrolled in self-contained and inclusion programs in a private school setting. She is also a SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) certified support group facilitator. She currently maintains a private practice specializing in parent training, coaching and support services for gifted and twice exceptional children and adolescents and their families. In addition to her private practice, Melissa is a parent coach and trainer for Ramapo for Children, conducting workshops for parents of children with ASD.  She resides in Sea Cliff with her eighteen year old son.
