RICH & (IN)FAMOUS OF NY: African-Americans, like other racial and ethnic groups, have their own Hall of Fame and Infamy. A slave named Caesar was hung in 1741 for leading the New York Slave Insurrection. Pierre Toussaint rose from slavery to be the richest former slave in the city during the early republic.W.E.B. DuBois, Madame C.J. Walker, the queen of cosmetics, and Sylvia, the queen of New York City Soul Food, were famous during the Harlem Renaissance. Reverend Adam Clayton Powell Senior was an early Civil Rights leader, while his son went from being the city’s first African-American member of Congress to disgrace and exile.
