Massapequa Girls Lacrosse Goes to Finals Following Victory Over Port Washington

Chiefs beat Vikings, 15-10, to set up a rematch with the Dalers in the finals.

The Massapequa girls lacrosse team seem to be regular visitors to the Class A finals. With their win on Thursday night over Port Washington, 15-10, at Denton Avenue Field, Massapequa is making the trip yet again.

The second-seeded Chiefs (12-4) defeated the third-seeded Vikings (13-4) for the second time in the month of May to set up a meeting with the Dalers of Farmingdale next week at Hofstra University for a shot at the championship.

Kelsey O’Brien led the way with four goals and two assists and Madalyn Pimental added four goals for Massapequa. Alexa Froccaro scored three goals for Port Washington in the loss.

Massapequa jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind goals from O’Brien, Pimental and Nicole Boylan. Port Washington got on the board after a goal from Froccaro. But Massapequa extended their advantage to 6-1 after a quick run, including two goals by Rory Sadoff.

After four more goals, including two from O’Brien, Massapequa led convincingly at halftime 10-4. However, Port Washington proved to be no easy out in the second half.

Danielle Doherty scored the first goal for Massapequa in the half at the 17:26 mark, but not before Port Washington put in four goals within the first few minutes. With the score standing at 11-8, Massapequa scored the next three goals to extend the lead to 14-8.

Port Washinton had a goal taken off the board with 5:50 left in the game for a crease violation. After two more Vikings goals and one from the Chiefs, the tested match up was settled with Massapequa coming out on top.

Heroes: Kelsey O’Brien controlled the Massapequa offense with her game-high six points in the win. Christina Fiorinelli played well in goal with 11 saves for the Chiefs.

Turning Point: Massapequa scored four consecutive goals late in the second half to put the game out of Port Washington’s reach.

Quotable: “We had a really great first half and the entire game was just like the first time we played Port Washington. It was back and forth and they were a very good team,” said Massapequa head coach Megan Zimmer. “We know that Farmingdale is a great team and if we play hard, then we will be fine. We are looking forward to it and this is the game we wanted.”

“The kids played hard, but we just didn’t play consistently and I think that if we had stuck to our game plan more, which was possessing the ball more, then we wouldn’t have come up short,” said Port Washington head coach Raquel Piraimo. “These kids have figured out how to win games and they were part of something successful this season.”

Bottom Line: Massapequa will attempt to win their first title since 2005, but must get past rival Farmingdale first, the team that has won every crown since, all over the Chiefs. Port Washington won nine of their last 11 games on the season, with both losses being to Massapequa.

Key Stat: Massapequa collected nine assists to Port Washington’s two.
