4. Temple Beth Israel Presents Ruth Gruber: A Living Witness to History. Gruber was the first journalist to enter the Soviet Arctic in 1935. In a secret wartime mission in 1944, she escorted 1,000 Holocaust refugees from Naples to Oswego, NY. She also covered the ordeal of the refugees aboard the ship "Exodus" in 1947. .
