OPINION: Supporting the Budget and Bond

Both are critical to the future of Port Washington students, the authors say.

After months of discussion and careful consideration of the needs of the students and the community, the has proposed a responsible budget in these trying times. The proposed 2.07 percent budget increase maintains our district’s quality educational programs and is within the TAX CAP.

And, after many discussions and inspections of our schools’ roofs, the Board of Education is proposing a much-needed $6.975 million bond. This bond will allow the district to install a new roof at and sections of roofing at , and . The district will borrow only the dollars it needs for this work, which will eliminate a danger to our entire community.

The Board of Education started the process of discussing the school budget in September and has made every effort to listen to all community members’ concerns. This budget is not perfect and there are certainly things that we would have liked to see included. However, now, more than ever, it is imperative that we all go out and vote in support of this proposed budget and roof bond. Apathy will put our community at risk for failure and that will ultimately cost us much more.

The School Budget Vote and Election will take place on Tuesday, May 15, from 6 am to 10 pm. All registered voters are eligible to vote in the School Budget Vote and Election.

It’s time for all of us to come together now for our children’s future. Please join us in voting YES for the 2012-2013 School Budget and YES for the Roof Bond!
