OPINION: Vote Yes on School Budget

Editor's note: The following was submitted by Lauren Edwards and Stephanie Silverstein, Co-Presidents Port Washington Schools Parents’ Council.

After months of discussion and careful consideration of the needs of the students and the community, the Board of Education has proposed a 2014-2015 school budget that delivers responsible, quality education within the tax cap levy limit.

We encourage everyone to vote YES for this budget on Tuesday, May 20.

The proposed budget is a sincere example of unions, administration and the Board of Education working together to provide the best for our children while understanding the concerns of our community at large.

The 1.35 percent tax cap levy increase is very limiting for our school district. The Board of Education and administration believes strongly in maintaining current programming, while continuing the necessary investments in technology, security and professional development and is therefore using monies from reserves to do so. This along with the $1.3 million in concessions from our teachers union from last year’s agreement will allow our district to continue moving along the positive path we are on.

It is imperative however, that we all go out and vote in support of this proposed budget.  Now, more than ever, we need to show our support for the collaboration amongst all our bargaining units. Apathy will put our community at risk for failure and that will ultimately cost us much more.

The School Budget Vote and Election will take place on Tuesday, May 20, from 6 am to 10 p.m.  All registered voters are eligible to vote in the School Budget Vote and Election.

Please come show your support and vote for our children’s future.  Please join us in voting YES for the 2014-2015 School Budget!
