Port Schools Presentation: 'Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Youth Depression'

An event for adults Monday at Weber Middle School, 7-8:30 p.m.

Bullying, whether in the school yard or on the internet, can hurt the entire family.

John Halligan knows this first-hand. He lost his 13-year-old son, Ryan, to suicide on Oct. 7, 2003, after the boy was bullied by classmates at school and online.

John Halligan will deliver a presentation, "Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Youth Depression" to adults on Monday at Weber Middle School from 7-8:30 p.m. Halligan’s presentation will cover the lessons learned too late for his family regarding how to deal with bullying, cyberbullying, and teen depression.

The aim of the presentation is to empower parents with strategies to take preventive actions with their children.

Those with with questions are encourged to contact the district's Safety and Substance Abuse Chairpersons Stephanie Joannon at Sjoannon@portnet.k12.ny.us or Karen Sloan at Sloany@optonline.net.

This was a very powerful presentation with a lot of great tips for parents. It highlighted how much more we need to be aware of our children's on-line activity. We teach them not to talk to strangers, but it is kids they know that are more apt to be the problem. It was very sad that more parents did not show up to hear Mr Halligan speak.
