The Port Washington Board of Education recently adopted a resolution to grant certain qualified those who are veterans, Gold Star Parents, or both, and live within the district, a partial real property tax exemption.
The measure was adopted at the March 11 Board of Education meeting at Schreiber High School, following the amended New York Real Property Tax Law Section 458-a.
Under the New York State Alternative Veterans’ Exemption program, qualifying district veterans can receive reductions to school taxes levied on their primary residences.

Veterans can apply for the exemption by contacting the Nassau County Department of Assessment in Mineola at 516-571-1500. The department is responsible for developing fair and equitable assessments for all residential and commercial properties in Nassau County on an annual basis.
