Roof Work Winding Down at Port Schools

Repair effort expected to be mostly finished by the start of class Monday.

An extensive roof repair job will be coming to a close soon at Schreiber High School, Weber Middle School, Gugenheim Elementary and Sousa Elementary, according to school officials.

Funded by a voter-approved bond, the project began just after graduation in June and is expected to be mostly completed by next week.

"Hopefully by the start of school Monday," said John Ristano, director of facilities and operations for the Port Washington school district to Patch.

By a 2397 to 761 vote in 2012, Port Washington residents approved the $6.975 million capital improvement bond. Prior to that, the district had been spending approximately $150,000 a year on repairs.

The bond money was to be used for a new Weber roof, and replacement of badly damaged sections of roofs at the other schools, plus the repair of the areas in each building damaged by water.

Some minor work is expected to continue a few weeks into the school year, according to Ristano.
