Own That Ponytail, Work That Updo

Get your hair and face picture perfect for the Gambol and other summer events.

Once the perfect ensemble has been assembled for the Gambol, it's time to focus on completing the look with hair and makeup.

Let's face it, a fabulously styled coif is a surefire way to distract from that one unwanted zit that always appears on the day of a big event. Breathe deeply, and keep these tips in mind when primping for the Gambol, weddings, parties and other events this summer.

Much like the fashion trends for proms this season, , hair and makeup trends are no different. Sleek buns and chignons, softly styled curls a la Veronica Lake and Rita Hayworth, and braided up-dos are all the rage this time of the year.

This sentiment was seconded by Dominic Commisso of the . "The flat iron is definitely out!" Commisso said.

This prom season has been all about creating layered looks, hair with movement, and "more natural and toned down styles," he said. Women and even men are drawing inspiration from celebrities on the red carpet who are also trying to capture the regalness of 0ld Hollywood with a modern feel.

Joe DeGuida, owner of the , agreed that men are getting in on the action this party season. Guys are requesting slicked back hair and handsome side parts much like George Clooney and his predecessor Cary Grant.

"Everybody's getting in on the old Hollywood trend, girls are coming in asking to look like Marilyn Monroe," he said.

If all else fails, one can never go wrong with a timeless blowout. Something that Tiffany Lee, owner of  knows all about. "We have a special promotion for students this month, all blowouts are $20," she said.

With makeup this prom season, as the saying goes, "less is more." Try focusing on one area of the face such as eyes, or lips. Opt for a crimson pout, or a smokey eye instead of pouring buckets of product all over. Remember to pay special attention to the areas on the face that are prone to being oily – around the T-Zone, for instance – by setting makeup with loose powder. This will ensure a matte look in photos and and avoid excess shine. Last but not least don't forget to take it all off before going to sleep that night to avoid unwanted breakouts.

With these tips in mind, you'll be sure to stun on the red carpet come Friday. Send us photos, we can't wait to see how your look turns out.

I hope the closing is only temporary. I purchased milk and other items from Dairy Barn for manyRead More years. Always got good quality products. Never had a problem.
Nassau Taxpayer May 23, 2013 at 03:55 pm
With the loss of "D-Barn", the lack of a drive-through convenience store creates a voidRead More worth filling.

There was very little publicity about the budget this year. I was disappointed that the increase wasRead More over 3.5 percent. We still haven't addressed the salary issues and maybe we never will. Until the salary and benefit package is decreased, there will never be a reduction in the cost of education in Port Washinton.
NYB May 23, 2013 at 03:33 pm
What does it matter? No matter what you do, the budget increase will pass. Just empty your pocketsRead More and move on.

if we are going to sell off our 40 spot lot why not advocate for the LIRR to chip in and helpRead More building the 2 or 3 story parking lot on Haven? with more trains and more population we need more parking. we are fooling ourselves that this is not a "Hicksville" type train station. we are a main hub and it needs a substantial parking lot that will help commuter parking and help retail parking in the main lots off of main street. anyone who does not want that parking lot built needs to really ask themselves why not. if we can build a new car wash on a main cut through street for no reason we can get this done with the same traffic nightmares!!! BTW during construction which im sure will take at least a year. where will those people park? in the other lots, so us who take the 808 train will get screwed bc we will not have a place to park now.
Nassau Taxpayer May 23, 2013 at 12:52 pm
Good spot for a multi-story municipal/LIRR garage, given the height of terrain behind it.

I agree. This lot should be open all the time. Maybe there is a potential liability issue butRead More let's see if it can be worked out.
