School Board Approves 2 Interim Administrators at Port Washington Schools

Both administrators bring considerable expertise, according to the school district.

The Board of Education recently approved Elaine Fenick as interim human resources administrator, filling in the opening created when Dr. Kathleen Mooney left that position to step up as interim superintendant of schools once .

In addition, Michael DeStio was approved as interim assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment – a spot vacated by who was recently hired as superintendant of schools by Valley Stream District 30. 

Fenick was approved by the BOE as the interim human resources administrator at the Aug. 7 meeting. She had worked in the Westbury School District for five years in the same capacity but that position was abolished due to budget cuts. Fenick also has human resources experience in the health care field.

Mooney said the district is "very fortunate to have been able to hire someone of Ms. Fenick's considerable knowledge, experience and background in human resources for this interim position." 

DeStio's position was approved by the board at a brief BOE meeting on Aug. 22. He had retired from the Half Hollow Hills School District in 2011 as the assistant superintendent for secondary instruction. Prior to serving in this position for 10 years. DeStio was the K-12 science director for six years and a chemistry teacher in Half Hollow Hills.

DeStio comes to Port Washington "with extensive knowledge and background in curriculum and instruction, particularly in the area of instructional technology," Mooney said. "We are very excited to have been able to hire someone of Mr. DeStio's experience and expertise in curriculum from a comparable high achieving school district."
