Common Core on School Board Meeting Agenda Tuesday

Meeting set for 8 p.m at Schreiber, weather permitting.

Legislators and other policymakers will be asked to apply pressure on the Commissioner of Education and the NYS Board of Regents regarding Common Core testing, according a proposed letter which will be discussed Tuesday at a school board meeting in Port Washington.

Common Core Learning Standards and testing requirements have a "detrimental impact of stress on students, parents and educators with regard to the current implementation," according to the yet approved letter recently drafted by the school board.

At a meeting Nov. 12, opinions among board members varied regarding a school district response to Common Core testing.

"The most difficult thing right now it does appear is that the state education department is reducing our children to data chips and we have to remember that they are feeling human beings just like we are," said schools Superintendent Kathleen Mooney last month.

Some are calling for a greater discretion of testing with a more fair, reasonable, appropriate action plan that supports the best educational interests of students.

"The uneven rollout of the Common Core Learning Standards among school districts and premature testing on common core content not yet learned has resulted in undue stress and pressure on students, parents and educators," according to the letter.

The meeting begins at 8 p.m. at Schreiber High School, weather permitting. It will be streamed live through the school district's website.
