School District Voters Pass 2011-12 Budget

Spending in $130.9 million budget expected to increase 2.96 percent over previous year.

Port Washington voters passed a nearly $130.9 million spending budget on Tuesday for the 2011-12 school year.

"I want to congratulate our community for coming together and supporting the school budget this year in such an overwhelming way," said School Board President Karen Sloan.

With a final tally of 3,064 to 1,848 in favor, residents within the Port Washington School district can expect to see a 3.95 percent increase in their collective tax levy in the following year.

Claiming the bulk of the spending increase was due to increased pension costs, lost state aid, contract provisions and unfunded mandates, Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Gordon said at the May 3 school board meeting, “We are putting out the best budget possible under the circumstances.”

Voting took place at , , and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
