Weighing in the on the difficulties surrounding the Common Core testing debate, Port Washington Schools Superintendent Kathleen Mooney says it's a very difficult place to be.

"The most difficult thing right now it does appear is that the state education department is reducing our children to data chips and we have to remember that they are feeling human beings just like we are," said Mooney, at a school board meeting Tuesday at Weber Middle School.

At the meeting,  the board agreed to draft a letter to state education officials stating their varied opinions regarding Common Core.

Addressing the issue of the proposed statement to state officials, Mooney said the board must think it through.

"It's going to be a challenge for all of us to look very deeply into our own hearts about what education means to us," said Mooney.
