In addition, NCTE awarded the Schreiber English department a certificate of commendation “because the superior achievement of each winner is a reflection of the teachers and the English program at Schreiber.”

Established in 1957, the Achievement Awards in Writing program encourages high school students in their writing. According to the organization, assessments of student writing are based on samples of their best prose or verse and on a themed writing. Two teachers judge each submission, looking especially for writing that demonstrates effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience. Papers are judged on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.
