Schreiber Student Wins President’s Volunteer Service Award

Hannah Fagen, a junior at has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities and their country. It was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Fagen participated in the Spirit of Community program this year, representing Schreiber High School.

Fagen earned her award for her commitment of service to the March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. She became involved with the organization in 8th grade and completed a group project on the organization in her PEP class.

In addition, Fagen serves as captain for Team Cupid, which raises funds to support programs that help mothers have healthy, full-term pregnancies. Independently, Fagen has added many hours of service to the organization’s mission and was recently ranked as the 16th fundraiser nationally. Fagen also volunteers in the maternity ward and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at North Shore University Hospital each week.

“Hannah clearly demonstrated her leadership skills and volunteerism for service to her community," said Schreiber principal Ira S. Pernick, in a statement. "She has demonstrated a passion for humanity and strength of character that goes above and beyond all expectations. Without a doubt, she deserves this honor with pride and distinction.”

Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young peoples across the United States for outstanding community service activities. More than 345,000 young people nationwide have been considered for these awards since the program began in 1995.
