Sousa Kids Fundraise for Tanzanian School

Third graders help others continue their education.

When students in Emily Baxter's third grade at  are named student of the week, they get to lead the class in a special project during their reign.

So when Charlotte Kerpen was named student of the week, she decided to use her time to help improve the lives of children who have fewer opportunities than she. Kerpen convinced her class to participate in LaLaLove, a movement where kids sing to raise money for a secondary school in Arusha, Tanzania. A new school building will enable students attending Shepherds Jr. Primary School, which goes from kindergarten through 7th grade, to continue their education.

Participating children in the LaLaLove project are asked to sing a song of love or gratitude, and record it on video. That video is then submitted to LaLaLove by an adult. Then they spread the word so that people can watch the video, and donate money.

Kerpen and her class sang "If I Ruled The World," a song made popular by the band Big Time Rush.

The school that raises the most money for Shepherds Junior school will receive a concert for their grade courtesy of XM radio. As of Friday, Kerpen and her class raised $2,025. The competition ends Friday at 11:59 p.m.
