Students Ecstatic About Back-To-Back Snow Days

School districts throughout Long Island have second straight snow day and local students are taking advantage of the time off.

The weathermen finally got it right. With snowfall ranging from 10 to 18 inches throughout the area, all Port Washington schools were closed on Wednesday and Thursday — and Port Washington students could not be happier.

"Double snow day equals double fun," said Schreiber 11th-grader Danny Kaminsky. "I had a snowball fight with my brother, Jared, on Wednesday and I'm going sledding at some point today."

Back-to-back snow days hadn't occurred in the district since the late 1970s, and it's clear that no student is complaining.

"When I woke up and actually saw snow [on Wednesday], it was great," said Rachel Scheinman, a sophomore at Portledge who lives in Port Washington. "I built igloos in my backyard during the Wednesday snow day and I can't wait to go build more igloos with my friends again during our second snow day."

Even those students who couldn't make it out of their houses on Wednesday said it didn't stop them from having an enjoyable day off. "There was too much snow in my driveway for me to leave, but it didn't matter in the end," senior Emily Szulman said said. "I still had fun, and a snow day alone was enough for me."

After she found out that there would be a second snow day this week, Szulman said, "A double snow day topped it all off. I'll make up for it on Thursday."

For the kids that were able to get out of their homes, sledding, having snowball fights and building snowmen were all part of the fun on Wednesday and Thursday.

"My parents got me this new sled for Christmas," said 10-year-old elementary school student, Peter Schindell. "And I got to use it two days in a row. Yesterday, I was at 'Suicide Hill,' but today I came to the high school because it was easier for all of my friends."

Kara Corciari, a seventh-grader at Weber Middle School, said that after snow was predicted but never came over the weekend that it was nice to see some accuracy. "It's good that the weatherman was right for a change," said Corciari, who went sledding at Salem Elementary School on Wednesday. "I would have been very upset with another lie."

Corciari explained that she spent part of the first snow day with her friends wishing for another snow day. And all their wishing paid off. "We wished so hard that we got another day off," she said. "We get to have another day to play in the snow."

After finding out the news that there was yet another snow day, seventh-grade Weber student Kate Kerin, who also spent much of the first snow day at Salem, was literally jumping for joy. Kerin said she plans to have a snowball fight and drink hot chocolate with her friends during the second snow day.

"Snow days are the bomb," she screamed while jumping up and down. "I hope we have more."
