Voter Registration Information for May 18 Port Washington School District Election and Budget Vote

Residents must be registered two weeks before next month's election and budget vote.

The school district budget vote will be held on Tuesday, May 18, from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. There are four polling locations: Sousa Elementary School at 101 Sands Point Road; Daly Elementary School at 36 Rockwood Ave.; South Salem Elementary School at 10 Newbury Road and Weber Middle School on Campus Drive.

To vote, you must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age or older, a resident of the school district for at least 30 days before the vote and be a registered voter. If you have not previously voted or have not voted in either a general election or a school board election within the last four years, you will need to register.

If you are not sure if you are registered, call (516) 767-5010. The school district has information provided by the Board of Elections in Mineola as well as their own voter records for the last four years and will be able to confirm your status. If you are not sure of your polling place or want additional information about the budget vote and election of trustees, visit the school district's Web site. There is a link on the home page under "Board of Education" with budget information, polling locations, absentee ballot information and voter registration information.

Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays, from the District Clerk or downloaded from the school district Web site. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk at least seven days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. After review of the application by the District Clerk, the ballot may be mailed or picked up personally by the voter only. No absentee voter ballot will be accepted or counted without a valid application form signed by the voter. Absentee ballots that do not reach the Office of the District Clerk or the appropriate polling location by 5 p.m. on the day of the election, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 will not be canvassed.

You can register to vote in the Administration Building, located at 100 Campus Drive, on school days from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. or at the Board of Elections at 400 County Seat Drive in Mineola. The phone number there is (516) 571-2411.

Another option is to use your own computer or one at the public library to register. Visit www.elections.state.ny.us and print out the registration form. This form must be mailed to the Board of Elections at 400 County Seat Drive in Mineola and received two weeks before the date of the local election, May 18.
