Weber Students Raise Awareness of Global Issues Thru Indy Film Fest

The event takes place at the library at Wednesday evening.

After a visit from Sylvia Wong [from Global Concerns Classroom, which helps connect young people to world issues] about the Millennium Development Goals, the 8th grade computer students from Mrs. Kornfeld’s and Mrs. Madonia’s classes created informational videos to raise global awareness. Each group chose one of the eight Millennium Developmental Goals set by the United Nations. The topics were Hunger, Displacement, Education, Water, HIV and AIDS, Child Labor, and Women’s Rights.

The students did a lot of research on their topics and came up with a Prove-It. A Prove-It is information broken up and cited in your own words. After handing in Research/Prove-Its and learning about how to make a successful movie, the kids went to work. The jobs were broken up into five groups: video/graphics editor, screenwriter, soundtrack/special effects editor, producer/project manager and credits /citation editor. Each of these roles had their own tasks and assignments. One interesting thing is that the soundtrack managers had to write a letter to the artist of the songs that they wanted to use in the video and ask permission to insert their music. The soundtrack person had to write a letter and actually send it to the artists' address. After that, the citation person put in all the rights/citations to the songs, images, videos, and information.  Soon everyone put all of their assignments together and voilà, movie was made.

Now the movies are presented in the in the . It is awesome that all the students get to see their movies on the big screen. It is an interesting project because you learn so much about technology and world issues. You get the opportunity to see everyone’s movie and learn about other people’s topic that you didn’t get to research. It is a great way to learn and we think people should continue with this project in the future.
